Re: Thanks button added

Having held back a little to observe, I think that Michael, aka SeaGtGruff, makes a very valid point.
It makes it very easy to say a "thank you" doesn't it?

Hope you had a good holiday, Chris?

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

Paul I would seriously look at that T420 John offered you for £120. If you replaced the hard drive with a SSD it would be like a brand new laptop and of course you can always plug in a larger screen if you want to. Sounds like a good deal to me. Whoops! Perhaps I phrased my contribution incorrectly...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

Sorry John, wasn't referring to your laptop but the cheapo ones available in the likes of Currys etc. They are cheap for a reason! You are, of course, quite right, Saul. Therefore absolutely no need for an apology. I hadn't taken offence, and I realised afterwards that your response was aimed towar...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

Be careful with cheap laptops. They may seem like a bargain but they can run incredibly slow especially when you start running DAW software and VST's! They just don't have the processing power to keep up. Cheap it may be, but a third generation i5 together with the incredibly solid construction tha...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

Regarding computers my builds go from £350 up to £850. I don't think anyone needs to spend more than that these days. How about 125 quid for a second user Lenovo Thinkpad T420, i5 2540m, 8GB, 320MB and re-installed Windoze 7, in good condition? ( Finally migrating from XP to 7! ) I stick with the l...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

Hi Paul,

No, I don't think I said paid for, this was the first time, I think I mentioned it:

In the past I've used the free CD ripper EAC (Exact Audio Copy) to convert a 'complete works' catalogue over the period of a couple of weeks.
Not that it matters one iota. ;-)

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

But if you are listening on a regular Hi-Fi system, then you are confident you can hear a significant difference (without wishing to sound like I am questioning your 'ears'!)? I mean, regular Hi-Fi systems (as you will obviously know) dress-up the character of the tone (ie. they are not flat-respon...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

Hi Paul, All I do is rip from whatever version I have. However, if I get to hear a remaster that I think is a significant improvement on the original, I'll buy the CD for that, and listen to it at home on the Hi-FI. If I want to be able to listen to it away from home on headphones, then I'll rip it ...

Re: Speakers for the PC (not studio monitors)!

Them's the chappies! ;-)

The bass is a bit weak in the lower registers as you'd expect for such tiny units.
Hence the additional sub.
Having said that, there is more than I expected. They fit well in a rather cramped desktop.

Those Rokits are supposed to be very good, Saul. ( Envy, envy!)

Re: TV soundbar plus sub.

Yes Saul, I did take a look at the various sound bases too. One of the things I used to like in the last of the old tube televisions was that the speakers were reasonably well separated, giving an approximation of stereo. The sound bases all sounded a bit monophonic to me, unless you invoked a surro...

Speakers for the PC (not studio monitors)!

Just another quickie whilst it's on my mind! Some weeks ago my very ancient pair of magnetically shielded speakers that sat either side of my monitor decided to start playing up. ( I hate to think how old they are! ) They're WestPoint ProDigital. Do they even exist today, I wonder. Must be 20 if the...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

Cheers John, Well you know, I kind of thought this myself about ten years ago, or so. Columbia brought out a ton of Miles Davis re-releases stating: 'Digitally Remastered!' and although my 'ears' were not as good as they are now, to me it was quite obvious that it was just something of an 'emperors...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

When the engineer goes back to the original, in this case, 4 track master tapes (that were then mixed down to a single track on another 4 track tape) before making the issued LP or the subsequent CD, then "yes"! In the case of the Sgt Pepper's 50th anniversary, the clarity is like your original desc...

Re: RE: Sony mp3 Walkman (help?)

I appreciate I am raising this question again (sorry!), but do you think the quality of the ripped 'EAC' track (in it's highest quality format) would equal (or get near to) the likes of this version of FAC (on the likes of this online retail site) please: http://store.acousticsounds.com/d/96892/Mil...

TV soundbar plus sub.

Hi to anybody interested in soundbars to augment their televisions. I must admit, as my hearing slowly deteriorates, that I've found listening to some programmes really hard work. Many actors seem to mumble these days ... or is it just me? I felt I needed a good quality sound bar and maybe a sub, as...
