The MMA MIDI specification.

Unread postby SysExJohn » Mon May 23, 2016 9:57 am

Howdy all,

For those deeply into MIDI who might require the MIDI specification (not for the faint of heart, beware all ye who enter here!) I managed to download it recently from the MMA, plus many other addenda. For some reason it is no longer available to get directly from them, from their web site. Legal? Broken link?

Be aware, this is not a product manual, but a detailed technical specification, full of tables and hexadecimal notation.
It sends the average non-technical person running screaming from it and tearing their hair. 8O :?

Anyway, if you need it, I can upload it all to box.net and make it available to the community ... privately, just in case.

Please send a PM.

Regards,
John.

Edited 23rd December, 2016.
The specs are no longer available directly from me. Try the wonderful MMA.

Is that The Complete MIDI 1.0 Detailed Specification Incorporating all Recommended Practices document version 96.1 third edition? If so, I was able to download it last month, plus several other documents, from the MMA web site (https://www.midi.org/) after joining for free last year. Previously those documents weren't available from their web site, although some tables were, but several months ago they totally revamped their web site, and eventually they posted the documents for download.

Yes Michael,

Them's the ones.
Only, I logged in again this morning to MMA.org, to see if they'd published the GM2 specification (I have GM1) and found that I kept getting "Error 404" for every file. Someone alse has commented that the links are broken.
I have the original spec. in paper format which I bought about five years ago, or more, plus GM1 and 2, and most of the CA's and PR's, but not all.

I have the following documents, downloaded from when they were still available. The last one is actually a printout of a web page where someone had updated the SMF specification document. If you're missing any of these, I can email them to you so you can add them to your Box.com page.

The one I'm missing Michael is the GM2-v12a.pdf at 185k.
Somehow I never got to find it.
Any chance of a copy?

Regards,
John.

PM sent. Let me know if the attachment didn't come through. :)

And thank you for posting these documents for others to download. I'm assuming (or hoping, anyway) that the 404 error is just a temporary thing while the MMA works on their "new and improved(???)" web site. ;)

Got it thanks Michael.

Re: "Improved" web site? My thoughts exactly.
I liked the old one better and tried to get them to carry forward material from the old forum.
Sadly, ...

Oh well!

John.

I just tried to download the GM2 specs from the MMA site and it worked for me. You might want to try it again and see if it's working for you now, too.

Hi John et al,

Regarding the PDF MIDI Specs, the MMA has the exclusive right to distribute those documents, which we chose to do directly to registered users of the midi.org website. Since we do not grant permission for anyone to redistribute the documents, no one should be posting those documents anywhere for anyone else to be downloading. Just to be clear.

P.S. to John: I also liked the old midi.org Forum better than the new one, but keeping the old one wasn't an option, so what I'd like to do is figure out how to make the new one better. Any suggestions are welcome, but please post them on the midi.org forum.)

Thanks and Regards,

Hi Tom,

Not an auspicious start to your membership here!
Rather than posting an introduction, you jump right in on a thread that's many months old and begin with a thinly veiled threat.
How to make friends and influence people.

Thanks for the clarification but, just to be clear, it was only whilst the documents were temporarily unavailable from the web site that I made them available via private request. Be assured, I won't further distribute them.
I am quite clear about the MMA's copyright.
I bought my originals from the MMA some years ago ... at a price!
Although a trifle galled at having paid for what is now free, I am glad that they've now been made publicly available.

A little while before the big upheaval to the public persona, Athan contacted me to ask for opinions and I suggested then that it would be a good idea to carry forward some of the useful posts from the old forum. There was some excellent material there. I suppose it's now gone?
I appreciate it might have taken some effort to browse and sort, but it would have been worthwhile IMHO.
Those of us who contributed over the years are left feeling "thrown on the scrap heap!"

Athan also asked me to write an article for the new site.
So far I haven't come up with a topic nor, it has to be said, felt inspired or motivated since what I contributed in the past has been assigned to the rubbish bin.

But I still contribute, where I can, to the new site.
I just wish I felt it was worthwhile!!!!!!!
The new MMA presence, I feel it must be said, is incredibly uninspiring.

But it's just my opinion, for what it's worth.
And after your amazingly friendly first post it's probably the last time that I'll post anything at all at the MMA.

Kind regards,
John.

Interesting discussion. What again makes me wondering is, why these "organisations" always try to make money in providing documents. Was that the initial intention when MIDI was created 35 years ago?

However, the newest SPECs are available in the darknet anyway, so there is no need to argue around that :-)
