Tempting ....... mac's are known to be better for music than pc's , but I would hate to have to learn yet another system,
and I'd rather buy more guitars and gear than having a brand new computer ...... still, looks like a VERY good price.

Indeed Peter,

When I joined the Music Dept at the Uni, I was and probably still am a confirmed PC person . . .

I eventually relented - and had a Mac on my desk for the next 15 years or so at work . . .

I can confirm that they are IME very dependable, stable and tend NOT to get in the way of whatever you are trying to do . . .

The move to intel and IDE was good IMO - and they never looked back.

I was sadly not there quite long enough to have an all-in-one iMac on my desk, but the ones we had in the various labs, ran ProTools LE and Sibelius

perfectly well.

The ones in the ad are earlier models for sure, and are graded refurbs, but it does provide an affordable "look" at what they are like "in the flesh". . .

The recent iMac models are around £1000, which makes them look expensive when you can buy a PC for much less.

That said, - LIMITING the hardware running-gear, DOES grant huge benfits in stability and reliability - which is why they are liked so much by people who have REAL WORK to do (IYSWIM)

The arguments will rage on for sure  IMHO - there is adequate room for both systems . . . . 8)

Not too bad a price but for comparison I bought my mid 2010 iMac 27, Core i3, 4Gb ram, 1Tb hard drive for £350. I did then upgrade the ram to 8Gb but I had that kicking around anyway so no cost there. I also replaced the 1TB Seagate for a 240Gb SSD (£60 at the time) which is much, much faster and although the capacity is less I have not noticed because MacOS is a lot more efficient with file storage than Windows.

I have been using macs since 2008 and would never go back to a PC, I even use the mac for gaming! The PC has been relegated to downloads and storage.

That sounds good Saul - So you actually GOT the expected hike, moving to SSD? 8)

I must say that I decided when I built my new PC to use an SSD for the system drive (256Gb)

I DID have it set up as a RAID, but decided against it - so the spare 256 SSD is now a clone of my system drive . . .

I clone and switch the drives from time to time.

I NO LONGER USE the User/Chris sub-directories on the C: Drive. They are on a separate 1Tb HD - so if windows has a bad day, ALL my data is secure.

I just install my clone and carry on.

An iMac on SSD does sound attractive, I must say . . . .

I've been thinking about getting a Mac Mini-- not for music purposes per se, but so I can try my hand at developing software for macOS and iOS.

Thanks Mike - you just reminded me . . . . . just before I was made redundant at the Uni, I was upgraded to a MacMini . . . 8O

I acquired it before I left  I think I have it lying around somewhere (probably the cmos battery has died)

Very nice compact little unit. CAN be opened - I Did - to upgrade the ram. Bet an SSD would go well in there too 8)

Yes massive change with the SSD in there. It's easily as fast as a new mac. I tested in store for a speed comparison and my mac was actually faster at opening apps than the new 5K model they had on display...and that thing cost just shy of £1500!
