Updated Forum Registration Settings - Please Read

Unread postby Saul » Tue Mar 18, 2014 8:41 am

I have updated the registration requirements to the forum in order to reduce the number of spam submissions. Have restricted User Name to between 6-11 characters. Passwords to 6-11 characters and must contain letters and numbers and have reduced the number of attempts at user registration before the lock out kicks in.

Have also indicated more clearly on the registration sign up that single word answers to the questions we ask simply will not do. How difficult is it to say how you came to the forum? We often get answers like "Google" or "Internet". Yet it takes only a few seconds to write what you were searching for etc? Please take a little time to answer the questions properly. It really does help keep the forum clean of spammers.

Hopefully these changes will not impact genuine users. It's always a balancing act between fighting spammers and keeping the user experience as unobtrusive as possible.

Good move.

It's only fair that members should give some basic information about themselves,

and it's useful to know what country they come from, especially when they ask for places to get repairs or spareparts.

Good people, please take a look at your profile, and see if it needs an update. :D

Thanks Peter.

I'm still getting 30-50 spam registrations per day but at the moment there is not much more I can do. Just had three whilst writing this!

There is a plug in I can use but I tried it on my dev server and it crashed the site so for now I think I will make do with manual checking of registrations. At least that seems to work :)

30-50 a DAY?

That's appalling . . . . Not that any of us would know - you are obviously seeing through their various ploys . . . . .

I'd certainly be willing to help out with that, if you think I'm clever enough - and would empower me to do so

I had no idea it was so prevalent . . .

Members SO NEED to indicate where they are - so recommendations can be "tailored" to their location - as Peter (and others) have said . .

I'm not sure there is an easy way to do the registrations on forums any more, not if you want to remain spam free anyway.

I think the majority of genuine applicants out there are fine with waiting for me to check before they get on the site. Most times I do it almost immediately because of course I work online so I see registrations as they come in.

Anyone who can't wait or understand why we need to do this is probably not the sort of person we want as a member of our little community anyway?
