New to Yamahaforum

Unread postby jllp128 » Thu Apr 20, 2017 2:20 pm

Hi, I am John and have been recommended to join the forum by an old friend. I am a gigging musician who originally played in a 1960's Blues band, but now play Bass guitar in a more modest lineup. We comprise of Bass, lead and rhythm guitars and keyboard, which is a Yamaha model. We use a range of amplification including a 1980's Yamaha combo amp and for practicing we have a couple of the excellent THR5C amps. I cannot believe the level and quality of sound that comes out of such a small and compact box.

Hi John, Welcome to the Yamaha Forums.

I can't argue about the splendor of the THR amps, I own a few of them myself. :D

Any topic, guitar, amps or keys, jump in anytime.

Best Regards
Peter

Hi John.

Glad to see you finally got onto the forum. We had some issues over the last few weeks and eventually it seemed the best way to sort them out was simply to restore an early version of the database. This worked but we lost a few posts and also some member sign ups. Hopefully the changes to membership registration, making it easier and quicker to register will mitigate that somewhat.

Anyway welcome to the forums. Hope we see you as a regular visitors :)

Welcome John . . . .

(I am the "old friend" John was referring to )

We met years ago at College on an ONC Sciences Course . . John stayed the course, but I didn't get on with it so well - and skipped to Metallurgical

Studies at a different College . . .

We were out of touch for years - and re-met on FB a while back. . . .

Welcome to the forum, John from another John.
Perhaps I'd better add another character to my name to distinguish between the two of us.

A blues band from the 60's? Did you by any chance play at the Arbor Youth club in Pyrford? If so I may have caught your act.

ONC eh?
Me too, as an electrical engineering apprentice at British Aircraft Corporation, Weybridge.
It had its home within the old Brooklands Race Track. VC10s, BAC1-11s, the Concorde early mock-up, and the ill fated TSR2.
After two years I stopped the ONC and started working on 2nd generation computers, no keyboard, just an operators console where you punched in octal values.
Happy days!

ATB,
JohnG.

That's one of the great things about social media. It's often remarked at how things like FaceBook and Twitter have killed social interaction but I think it's completely the opposite. It brings people together from all over the world who otherwise would never have even known each other existed. It enables old friends to find each other and it allows all of us to share information and be more informed about events as they happen.

Of course it's not all rosy in the social media garden. There is a certain element that seem intent on dragging it down to their level i.e in the gutter but, you can choose to report, ignore or ban them from your feed so you never need to see that crap ever again. Much like you can choose not to see posts from certain people on forums like this one ;)

The world CAN be a surprisingly small place . . .

Seeing Sysex's Aircraft references, reminded me that in my former (photographic) life I worked at The rocket propulsion Establishment, Westcot, BUCKS.

It was then MINTECH. We had a remote Hanger there that contained a Japanese OKA . . . .

Also there were the much overgrown testbeds where the Blue Streak Motors were developed (500,000 lbs thrust IIRC) . . . . .

I'm sure Derek will be jumping in at this point - as we DID have close ties with RAE Aberporth, although I never got to go there myself . . . .

So as a result of all this "history" - we DO in fact have have a quite serious technical backgound going on here - and I've not even mentioned Brian Allan,

Miks, Jima, Sonus and others here - who CONTINUE to amaze, down among the bits and the bytes . . . .

How can we NOT be surprised then that this one of the best places to be on the Internet (IMHO) - doing what we do?

One of THE best places, agreed.
No small credit goes to Saul too.
One of the best Admins on the planet.
(Can't vouch for the rest of the galaxy.) ;-)

(Now I wonder where that SysEx thread disappeared too?) :/:

I don't remember playing at the Arbor Youth club in Pyrford, but then the band, named the Mystic Blues Band which later changed to MYST with an album released entitled "Mr Mystic Man", played in so many different places. And you know what they say, that if you remember the 60's then you never truly lived it.

Yup, heard that said many times.

I DO remember, when Eric Clapton played with the John Mayall Blues Breakers, we helped the roadies get John's Hammond onto the stage. Same club.
About a three foot lift. It nearly killed me.
Then watching Eric play some amazing riffs whilst watching two gorgeous 'chicks', in mini skirts and skimpy sweaters, dance around their handbags, as they did in those days. 8O
Happy days!

Happy Days indeed . . . .

I didn't get to see Eric in the Flesh until the Cream Farewell Concert at the RAH in '68?
